... a section of the path from the clubhouse down to Onslow road will be closed on February 29th and will be reopened on March 1st. This is in accordance with our long-established policy of closing the path for one day each year to confirm its status as a private path, and does not affect access to the courts from either gate.Despite the forecast the night before saying sun and cloud, the organiser woke to grey skies and pouring rain! She quickly packed her bag with Christmas nibbles, an alternative form of entertainment along with tennis balls and racket, and optimistically headed up to the courts. The players arrived at the club with their fab silly hats but with the expectation of no play today. By the time they had meeted and greeted and played 2 quick rounds of charades, the weather was dry and brighter and play commenced. This event is as much about fun and laughter as it is about tennis skills but as always everyone is keen to get their best results so hats were momentarily put aside when battle commenced. The Draw of 5 rounds with players playing both with and against their competitors made for some close matches, and sudden death deuces finished quite a few games. The scores were close with most rounds ending 3-2. Once the tennis play ended Christmas refreshments as always were enjoyed. A couple of members unable to take part bowled up for mince pies and cheer, and judged the best Silly Hat. The winner of the Fun Tournament was Heather Bennett-Earle and close on her heels was Nicola Baker. Heather really should have gone to the casino in the evening as on a roll she also won the best Silly Hat.
It was all great fun, happily played in fine weather and in good spirit. Merry Christmas to all other tennis players may the snow not fall on your courts! In the New Year, Mike White will be starting a weekly group aimed at men returning to tennis as well as at improvers, focussing on doubles play, tactics and strokes. The cost will be £25 for each session, divided by the players attending, with a maximum of 8.
The sessions will be from 11:30 to to 12:30 on Mondays, starting on 8th January. Please contact Mike White to book your place: M: 07484 392557 E: mike.j.c.white@gmail.com The Christmas Supper at the Winking Prawn was a great success, and here's the proof ...
The courts have been closed this morning (Sat 2nd Dec) as there is heavy frost making them unplayable - they must not be used when the pile is frozen, as this damages the pile.
For the first club supper of this winter, we're venturing out of town ... all the way to Malborough!
On Thursday 2nd, Brightham House will be laying on a 4-course Italian Feast - for full details please go to the November Supper page. At last, the path from the clubhouse down to the side gate to the courts is open.
Yes, it's taken a long time and a lot of effort - but going through the process of incorporation, and getting agreement from surveyors and insurers regarding remedial works and appropriate signage has been slow going. Finally clearing the path and removing the temporary fencing didn't take too long, so now we're delighted that the path is open once again. We are delighted to announce that the club has now been incorporated and is operating as a Company Limited by Guarantee. That's an important step forward in our drive to reopen the path and our contractor will now come back and clear the path again. Once this has been done we intend to reopen the path following sign off from our public liability insurers.
As part of the Regatta week program, we are holding an Open day on Tuesday 1st August, from 2pm to 5pm. Mike White, one of our coaches, will be running a ball machine challenge for both kids and adults, and depending on numbers he may also run an American Tournament for adults.
Here's hoping for a sunny afternoon! |
